I take data security and privacy very seriously, and I will not capture any Personally Identifiable Information (PII). I use the fantastic (and free) Google Analytics service to gain insights into the visitors on my site so I can tailor the content to what is proving popular.

What Data Does Google Analytics Collect?

Google explains how they manage EU data and privacy here .

Key Points

Google Analytics 4 does not log or store individual IP addresses.

Information about the device used to access this website is collected and at the time of writing this could include the following:

  • City
  • Latitude (of city)
  • Longitude (of city)
  • Browser minor version
  • Browser User-Agent string
  • Device brand
  • Device model
  • Device name
  • Operating system minor version
  • Platform minor version
  • Screen resolution

The information is collected via cookies, and most web browsers allow you to control how cookies are handled per site. Please see the support website for your browser for further information.

I use Microsoft Edge as my browser, and can quickly change this setting by typing edge://settings/content/cookies into the address bar then adding the domain name for the site in the Block section.

IMPORTANT: Google collects and processes the data and I have no access to it other than via aggregated reports the platform provides.

What Do The Cookies Look Like?

I wanted to understand this so checked in my browser by opening the site and pressing F12 to enable developer mode. I then selected the ‘Application’ tab > ‘Cookies’ > ‘ https://www.thedevopsjedi.co.uk

You can see from the image below only 2 cookies are stored which don’t contain any PII.
